Everyone Gets to Feelin’ Blue – A smoke filled club. People rich and poor. Some old-time musicians in a traditional jazz band bare their hearts and souls to evoke warmth, tears and smiles in the audience.

Now is the Time – In the late fifties, early sixties I was listening to jazz in ¾ time. Bill Evans “Waltz for Debby”, Sonny Rollins “Valse Hot”, Dave Brubeck’s version of “Alice in Wonderland”

Reflections on Astrud and Stan – In a Washington, D.C. church, 1962 Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd recorded the song “Desafinado”. In 1964, Astrud Gilberto and Stan recorded the “Getz au Go Go” album.  Years have gone by. It’s now 2009. But, thanks for those memories listening to those LP’s.

The Moonlight and You – Catherine Alice Budd wrote this when she was fifteen. She grew up with a sister and brothers who played and sang. Years later we met and started writing songs together.

Calypso Town – Mardi Gras, the islands. Harry Belafonte, steel drums. The tune “St. Thomas” by Sonny Rollins.

Skater’s Ballet – Two figure skaters (sans skates) at a dance studio.  On one wall, mirrors with a balance bar. Their coach barks like a drill sergeant. “ONE, TWO, THREE, LIFT.   NO, NO, YOU’RE LATE. CONCENTRATE! AGAIN, ONE, TWO!!”  The sore muscles, sweat, the hours and hours, the falls, bruises.   So that months from now the audience can see beauty on ice.

Add a Beat, Outta Beat Waltz – A guy who can’t dance stands at the edge of the floor. A pretty girl coaxes him. “Come on, just try it. Feel the music. Leave it to your feet.” She wins. He follows her onto the floor.

Where We Are – Charles Trenet (composer of “La Mer”) sings.  His conductor/piano player from Montreal tickles the ivories. They’ve just toured Europe and this is the first stop on their US Tour. Ahh, Paree! Maybe someday I’ll get to go there.
